The strength of plant stems is a key factor determining crop resistance to lodging. For a long time, lodging in crops such as corn, sorghum, and tobacco has posed significant challenges for mechanical harvesting. In terms of mechanization levels, this has resulted in substantial grain waste. Additionally, crop lodging leads to insufficient sunlight exposure, severely limiting yield potential. Conducting in-vivo measurements of plant stems throughout growth stages, followed by statistical analysis of population data based on the correlation between stem fiber layer bending resistance and lodging resistance, holds significant implications for crop cultivation and breeding.
Plant stem strength is measured using tension-compression sensors. By applying needle penetration, crushing, or breaking forces, the maximum force generated at the moment of stem fracture or yield is recorded, representing the stem's strength.
Three different probes: Enable measurement of stem bending performance, stem compressive strength, and stem tissue structure (puncture) strength.
